Tooth extraction is performed only when all other methods of tooth treatment have been done or when the tooth must be removed for orthodontic reasons.
Our goal is always to extend the life of the tooth and we concentrate on saving and treating it as long as possible.
On the other hand, wisdom tooth extraction is a different story and each patient is advised what to do in accordance with many factors that we take into account.
Wisdom teeth are not problems themselves. They sprout after the age of eighteen and their late sprouting can go so smoothly that the patient does not even feel that anything has happened.
Problems can arise when there is no room for the wisdom teeth in the jaws, so they cannot erupt properly.
The wisdom teeth can then:
• remain in the bone (impacted)
• can damage the neighboring tooth when erupting
• partially emerge, and partially remain covered by the gums and potentially cause inflammation of the gums and surrounding tissue (pericoronitis).
If the wisdom teeth are in bad positions even before the eruption, the extraction is done at that stage in order to avoid potential further problems.
Root fracture, advanced caries, periodontal disease are more common reasons why a dentist may recommend tooth extraction. Having known that, advice must be followed on how to reduce the negative effects that may occur due to the loss of a particular tooth.
The majority of tooth extraction are performed by dentists, but in some cases, the involvement of an oral surgeon is necessary.
Tooth extraction does not have to be a painful and unpleasant experience because it is performed under anesthesia.
